Class Descriptions Babies (Keiki & Keiki Hou ages 2 - 5 years old, Kaikamahine 6 - 9 years old) Children are introduced to basic movement/coordination, rhythm through music and dance. They learn the Hawaiian alphabet, pronunciation, how to count in Hawaiian, etc. The families are introduced to Hālau traditions and protocol. Children perform in annual recitals, concerts, festivals and/or community events. Young Adults (Maile/Liko 8 - 14 years old, Kane 8 - 16 years old) Students learn "Ike Kumu" basic hula fundamentals and technique in Kahiko (ancient style of hula) and Auana (modern style of hula), Hālau traditions and protocol. They are also introduced to dances that use hula instruments. As part of Hālau, these classes perform in annual recitals, concerts, festivals, and/or community events. Adult Classes All students are required to take "`Ike Kumu" (Basic Knowledge) to learn the basic hula fundamentals and technique in Kahiko (ancient style of hula) and Auana (modern style of hula) and our Hālau traditions and protocol. In order to be formally accepted in Hālau, each student must complete the pre-requisite class. Upon completion, the student graduates into the Hālau and is placed in the designated class based on age and competency which is at the discretion of the Kumu.
